Level 1 Umpiring Courses:-
Avon and Somerset Hockey Umpires Association are only too pleased to run a Level One Umpire Course (LOR) if there is sufficient demand in the old Avon and Somerset area, the area we cover. LOR is the minimum requirement for anybody umpiring most league games. A minimum of 10 candidates is required to make a course viable but that does not have to be from one club so it is always worth contacting Martyn Errington on 01749 342289 to register your or your clubs interest. The qualification requires the passing of a written examination, umpiring 3 full matches to the satisfaction of the captains (they sign a card to this effect) and an assessment game selected by the Association all within a 12 month period. To help with the written exam we run theory sessions usually over 4 evenings, including the exam. Unfortunately at present there is not the resource for practical coaching but usually there is somebody within a club who can provide guidance - please choose the good ones! The cost £40 per candidate - theory sessions, written exam and one assessment game.
Player behaviour policy
Read the behaviour policy here.
The West Hockey Umpires Association has implemented this behaviour policy for all hockey players.
2007-08 Rules
Click here to view the 2007-08 Rules Briefing from the FIH.
The foot rule WILL NOT be umpired ANY different to how it has been this year. If the use of the foot DISADVANTAGES the opposition then a free hit (or equivalent) will be given.
With respect to the hard forehand edge hit, my advice to players is don't do it! There is no need as other, legal, hits are easier to control and perform. However, if a player does do it it is down to the umpire to penalise if their interpretation of what has happened is in breach of rule 9.6.
The 2 minute injury rule stipulated in the FIH briefing is for INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS ONLY and is NOT to be used in ASHUA appointed games or other games in the county.

2007-08 Rules Clarification - Goalkeeper substitution
Following a number of queries received from Clubs, the FIH confirm that at penalty corners an injured or suspended goalkeeper can only be replaced by a similarly equipped goalkeeper
If the ‘GK’ on at the time was fully equipped, the replacement must be the same. If they were equipped with only protective headgear, then the replacement can wear only the same. For the avoidance of doubt, a goalkeeper wearing only protective headgear may not be replaced by a fully equipped goalkeeper
